Then head to the quaint island of Sark where cars are forbidden and everyone travels by horse and carriage or bicycle.

You’d have to be a real fish-o-phobe not to want fresh Guernsey seafood for your dinner.

The Fermain Beach Cafe serves crab sandwiches, scallops with bacon and sea bass with an equally tasty view. In summer, book in advance.

Guernsey ain’t known for its pumping nightlife, but there’s plenty of hotel bars willing to serve you a cauldron of gin.

Red has harbour views, The Captain's has live music, and the Leopard Bar makes you feel like a Russian oligarch’s plaything.
