Ipswich, eh?
Sandwiched between two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Ipswich is the meaty filling to Suffolk’s sub. The surrounding countryside is fairytale good-looking, but Ipswich is it’s slightly grittier (whisper it), more interesting support act.Take to the waterfront for foodie culture and maritime history smooshed together 😍 Or follow the cobbled streets into town for art galleries and antiques.
Where will I sleep?
Salthouse Harbour Hotel… you okay, hun?Yeah don’t let the sensible red-brick front fool you, your hotel is batshit crazy. There’s a zebra (fake) in the lobby and pearl-wearing suits of armour in the hall ⚔ Just because.
Sitting pretty on the Quay, Salthouse has got the whole of Ipswich’s waterfront stretching out in front of it. Rooms are an eclectic mix of exposed brickwork and antique furnishings, plus Vivienne Westwood rugs and Damien Hirst posters. SIGN US UP.
What will I do?
It’s a ten-minute walk along the marina and via Wolsey Gate to get to St Peter’s Street. Start your day at Applaud Coffee and nab a seat in the suntrap garden, or head over the road to Hullabaloo for boho vibes and vegan eats. The train is leaving caffeination station. All aboard. Your next stop is the independent shops on the street. Have a peek in Merchant House, Crafty Baba, and The House in Town.
After, carry on to St Nicholas Street and hunt for bargains at Cromwell Antiques, stock up at Mr Simms Sweet Shop, and hit Hopsters for a craft brew. Finish your day back at the hotel. The Head Chef is Suffolk’s Chef of the Year 2019, Luke Bailey. His nduja parmesan arancini with squid ink aioli is pretty much a spiritual experience.
