1. Mostar
Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Mostar is like watching a young Leo Dicaprio film, so pretty it almost hurts your eyes.
Sit at the mouth of the famous Stari Most bridge and stare at bae’s face in the too-blue water below.
Once you’ve explored Mostar’s cobbled streets and underground cave bars, get out to the Kravice Waterfalls (just an hours drive) for a wild romantic hike and a freezing swim in the crystal waters.
Nothing says romance like a good old fashioned monastery, so head down to The Blagaj Tekija Monastery where you can rent a rowboat to explore the dark inner caves and twinkling grottos.

2. Skopje
Skopje, Macedonia
Paris and Venice are basic bitches next to the likes of Skopje.
Macedonia’s capital will have you eating out of her welcoming, outstretched hands.
Old House Restaurant will do you large sharing platters of meats and cheeses whilst musicians serenade you with national instruments.
Then slip off to Lake Matka for medieval buildings, ancient monasteries and many a dark, enchanted cave. Hop on a raft and sail through the gorge, stopping to see the frescos in the Monastery of St. Andrew’s.

3. Cairo
Cairo, Egypt
An oldie but a goodie - Cairo will make you tingle in all the right places.
Sure the city centre is messy, fast and loud but it’s as alluring as that ancient minx Cleopatra.
The Pyramids of Giza are about as romantic as it gets… giant symbolic tombs built by thousands of workers over twenty years… ‘forget cremation love, this’ll work’.
Or if you prefer to get hot and sweaty - the merchants of Khan al-Khalili will sort you out.
Tiny candlelit courtyards are stacked with soap, gem stones and toy pyramids. Stop into a coffeehouse to get your bearings.
