Porto Santo, eh?

Porto Santo is the lovechild of Madeira and La Gomera...

Soft sandy beaches run into dramatic volcanic rocks and the lush mountains hide epic hiking trails ⛰ This pocket rocket bobs about in the sea just to one side of Madeira.

The capital is Vila Baleira where the houses are whitewashed, the streets are cobbled, and the tavernas are always serving up face-sized prawns 🦐

Where will I sleep?

In a fresh, sunny room where the colours are feel-good, the mod cons are on point, and your alarm clock is the sea 🌊

Hotel Pestana Porto Santo is serving BPE… that’s Big Pool Energy. Do your best lazy turtle impression in the outdoor lagoon pools or hang out in the adults-only area 🐢

This is the kind of place where palm trees keep the Balinese day beds shady and there are little footbridges to cross over the pools. There’s a handful of good restaurants to carb-load in after a day of sunbathing (on the beach) or hiking (in the mountains).

What will I do?

Your hotel is set right in front of a dreamy beach (Porto Santo) and with rugged mountains in the background. Just next door is Pestana Porto Colombus - which we recommend for local eats like the scabbard fish with fried polenta and a glass of poncha (alcohol with honey and fruit… you’ll like it).

It’s a 45-minute walk to the capital but there’s also a courtesy bus that takes 5 minutes. Don’t be put off though! It’s a weaving path that takes you by yellow houses with terracotta roofs and twinkling coastline.

Christopher Columbus lived in the capital - Vila Baleira - and if it’s good enough for a famous explorer, it’s sure as hell going to keep you busy. Psst! Visit his house for sea exploration info and general Arch Digest vibes. Afterward, head to Pastelaria Pimenta for Pasteis de Feijao. It’s a flaky pastry stuffed with almond and bean custard.

It takes half an hour to walk from your hotel to Pico de Ana Ferraira. It’s well worth it. This jagged volcanic ridge looks like it was leftover from the Jurassic period and has loads of great hikes.
