A Walk through the Line

A Walk through the Line

“And the winner of the European Capital of Culture 2017 is… Paphos”

This tiny city in Cyprus is pulling out the big guns with arty exhibitions up to its nose hairs.

The highlight is a cave-based masterpiece, “A Walk through the Line” by Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota.
Her red string installation is part of a giant visual art exhibition ‘Terra Mediterranea: In Action’, where local and international artists consider Mediterranean identity.
The string net aims to show the complexity of Mediterranean politics, history and identity. Yep fairly complicated stuff.
The net and wooden boats represent the current refugee crisis in the Mediterranean basin.
Set up in the Fabrica Hill cave, it took 12 people working full time for 2 weeks to complete the project. (They still have red string nightmares).
And it’s free. Head there before the end of November to catch a special performance, film screening or talk in the cave.
