Malta
We like: GozoEdward Lear was so impressed by Gozo’s coastline, he had to make up words to describe it. ‘Pomskizillious and gromphiberous’ to you too, mate. But Gozo is full of these quirks. With ancient megaliths, giant’s-eye sea pools and towns like Xlendi and Xewkija, this is a Maltese island full of magic. There’s no airport - from Malta get an hour bus to Ċirkewwa and then a 25min ferry. Remember to check ferry times vs your flights.
Slovenia
We like: Bled“Could you take a photo of us snogging in front of the church? Make sure you get the swans in.” Sigh. Bled reels in honeymooners with its emerald green lake, teeny island and medieval Disney castle but you don’t have to be shacked up to enjoy this Slovenian nirvana. Gondola through its dreamy waters or whitewater raft down Vintgar Gorge’s gushing rapids. Dry off with a cake and cocktail at a 19th century villa on your way back.
Croatia
We like: SibenikSibenik’s like a historical lasagne. There’s candy coloured new-builds, post-war tower blocks and Medieval castles all smushed on top of each other. It’s less busy than Croatia’s big boys, but with all the same twinkly, historical charms. Pootle about its ancient streets, dodging vespas and fishermen. You’re never lost when there’s leafy squares and ice-cream parlours round every corner.
Germany
We like: MemmingenHidden in deepest darkest Bavaria, Memmingen is the postcard-perfect medieval town you've never heard of. A little river weaves around lick-able pastel houses and there's flower baskets everywhere. You get the feeling this guy wins town of the year errry year. Follow the toasty smell of freshly bread to the centre for market day pastries and chats with the locals. This is a sleepy town. Days are spent smashing schnitzels and sampling local brews.
Norway
We like: Oslo“Ha det bra” (Have it good!) Stunning people, forest beaches, rooftop bars, a buzzing design scene and an Olympic bobsleigh track. Yeah, Oslo has it alright… Don your fake designer sunglasses and head for Grünerløkka where organic cafes morph into jazz clubs at night. The islands circling the city are the ideal place to swim or hike - Norwegians are mad for that outdoor life.
Bulgaria
We like: SozopolSay hello to the Balkan Mediterranean. It might look like an idyllic seaside resort town… Cos it is, but Sozopol’s got a garlicky secret. The remains of a ‘vampire’ were discovered in 2012 (or at least a dude with a steak rammed through his ribs). Weird medieval burial stuff… Perched on the Black Sea, Sozopol is close to Bulgaria’s famed mud baths and pockets of water so salty you can float like the dead.
