Underwater Museum

Lanzarote , Spain

“You ok brahh?”

Welcome to Museo Atlántico in Lanzarote where over 300 life sized statues make up thought-provoking installations. Spooky.

Artist Jason deCaires Taylor has created Europe’s very first underwater museum…
Jason hopes to raise environmental awareness and social change through the museum.

His work “aims to mark 2017 as a pivotal moment, our world’s oceans and climate are changing and we need to take urgent action before it’s too late.” Preach.
Wrestle into a wet suit and dive 12 metres deep to see a faceless couple take a selfie, figures walking towards a massive dividing wall (*cough* Trump) and Narcissus staring at his reflection in a mirror.
One of the most moving pieces is ‘The Raft of Lampedusa’, a scene inspired by the current refugee crisis.
The whole project took 3 years to complete with Jason using locals to model for the figures. That's why they’re eerily realistic.
But why is it under the sea? The marine park acts as a fake coral reef for sea life, so expect to see a whole load of colourful fish attracted to the lifelike figures #ecogoals.
Visit with Lanzarote Dive College for £44 or try get there yourself and pay £12 for museum entry.
