WHERE THE FOOK?

WHERE THE FOOK?

“And this must be... a Vietnamese rice farm”

Yeah... sort of.

It’s the Duoro Wine region in Portugal.

The vineyards here are ‘terraced’ (i.e, look like steps) just like the ‘terraced’ rice farms on the Vietnam-China border. But these ones are just over an hour from Porto.
Farmers cut into the mountain, so they have flat areas for growing crops, like rice and grapes.

And it works. This region is where ‘port’ wine comes from. They’ve been growing it here for centuries, it’s UNESCO af.

There’s 6 oldy-worldy wine villages dotted about the river Duoro.
Pinhao’s a cobbly, sleepy little village right in the middle of a river bend. Head up to the Quinta do Seixo estate for port with views across the valley.

It’s also got one of the world’s cutest train stations - the tiles here are the stuff of legend.
For fancy baroque architecture and bendy medieval lanes head on to Lamego.
Or session as many of the wineries as you can in a day on a river boat cruise.

Drink your way around the whole valley, before heading back to Porto.

It’s just over an hour’s drive (sober).
