Walking about seems like a cop-out free activity, but each area in Barcelona has a distinct vibe that'll give you a fresh new sense of the city.

Try Barri Gòtic for medieval history, Gràcia for its community vibes, Las Ramblas if you like being in a sea of tourists (go early to avoid them) or Sants-Montjuïc for views away from the crowds.

For some mid-walk entertainment, stop for a boule at one of the many pétanque courts that are (confusingly) everywhere.

Get some classic Barcelona in your eyeballs by looking (for free 🎉 ) at Gaudí's La Sagrada Família and Casa Batlló from the outside.

Loads of museums have free days on Sundays (including the Museu Picasso).

If you prefer your art out in the sunshine (fair) there are Miró sculptures littering the city. Check out the giant ‘Woman and Bird’ in Miró parc, or find a mosaic of his outside the wall of Terminal 2.

Of course, if you’re strapped for cash the best free thing to do in Barca is to head to the coast.

Barceloneta is the most popular beach, with some vertigo inducing public art.

Ocata Beach will help you avoid the suncream and sweat drenched crowds.

Mar Bella Beach (don't worry, not that Marbella) or San Sebastian are good if you fancy a side order of nipple with your sand - they're the best nudist beaches in town.

For lunch, stock up on free samples at the famous indoor market Mercat de la Boqueria. There’s a rainbow spaff load of fruit and veg, seafood for dayyys, tapas bars, pizza and rows and rows of jamón.

At dinnertime, let Paco Meralgo toast you up the best pepito (steak sandwich) of your life for only €3.35 👅

Instead of a sweatbox bar full of tourists, climb up Turó de la Rovira hill to the Bunkers del Carmel. Here you can mingle with the locals as you sink street beers and watch the sun set over the city.

Easy, Moog. This tiny underground venue turns its nose up at Apolo and Razzmatazz - why go to mega clubs when you can sweat all over homegrown techno.

Wednesdays are big here (€5 entry) but everyday has its own night.
