Locals don’t do coffee here, they do ‘horchata’ (almondy milk) instead. Join them at Horchateria Santa Catalina after a heavy night in El Carmen on the ‘Agua de Valencia’ (orange juice with champagne, vodka AND gin?!)

Where will I sleep?

NH Valencia Las Artes nails the location game. You’re a couple of minutes from the science museum, aquarium and IMAX, with buses outside ready to take you into the old town, and the beach just 15 minutes away when you fancy a change of scene.

There’s also a pretty great view of the opera house, which doesn’t hurt. Back at the hotel, you’ve got an indoor heated pool open all year, a sauna for a bit of pre-dinner unwinding, and three terraces.

Food is handled by the on-site restaurant serving up Mediterranean dishes, and they're even throwing in a free buffet breakfast every morning.

What will I do?

Families samba to steel drums, street artists light up in parks and poets read to sunbathers drinking herbal ice- tea…

The Russafa barrio’s a honeypot of Latin American, Chinese, Maghrebian culture and ‘good vibes’. Stroll down Calle Literato Azorín to Ubik Cafe (a bar-cum-library).

After, head to Tanto Monta for moreish montaditos (little bites). Locals rate the montadito de solomillo con queso brie (sirloin steak and brie) and pulpo con patata y ajoaceite (squid with potatoes and aioli).
