Rijeka is the gateway to all of Croatia's prettiest islands. Bring a mate and sleep on an actual boat, complete with deck chairs for sunbathing and a bar where you can channel your inner Jack Sparrow for just £353 per person.

This Croatian beauty was recently voted European capital of culture for its mashup of Austro-Hungarian architecture, Italian street names, and Roman ruins.

Oh, and it's right by the Adriatic with a marina looking like a postcard come to life. Zdravo, Rijeka.

Where will I sleep?

Botel Marina is (of course) a hotel on a boat in the marina.

This isn't your average floater though. This boat comes with a scenic restaurant, a bar no pirate could pass up and even a gym. We'd probably spend more time lounging on the deck than doing aerobics though.

What will I do?

Rijeka is plastered with ancient architecture and street artists have been giving the crumbling walls a makeover. Head to Ulica Franje Račkog or Ružićeva Ulica for photorealistic murals.

With 15 kilometers of coastline, you know this town can rustle up a good fish dish. Head to Konoba Nebuloza for a scampi risotto or tuna steak topped with micro herbs and fancy garnishes.

Rijeka’s own beaches are kind of pebbly but hop on the ferry to Susak island and soon you’ll be making sand angels in unspoiled bays away from the crowds. To feel even more like a hermit, hop on over to Silba island. It’s got but one little settlement and zero roads or cars.
