EATING THE LAKE DISTRICT

Chuck on your most forgiving elasticated waistband and fasten your seatbelt (not too tight)... You’re going on an epic foodie road trip in The Lake District.

Mirror-shine lakes straight out of a fairytale and craggy fells waiting to destroy your leg muscles. There’s no denying that the Lake District is steal-your-partner good looking. But it’s also tasty.

Here's where to get the best of it in your mouth...

Yard 46

Kendal, United Kingdom

A hidden courtyard cafe with a Scandi chic feel… Lake District, you got LAYERS.

Start your day/road trip/tastebud epiphany right with a breakfast at Yard 46. The zen vibes - hello, lavender potted plants - are good, the eats are even better. The menu is best described as standard fancy breakfast shiz.

Think pesto eggs on sourdough and pulled pork and avocado buns. But they elevate it by using duck eggs and homemade bread. Which you will leave with armfuls of. Portions are generous too, expect three rashers lovingly crammed into your bacon butty.

The Smith

Windermere, United Kingdom

Tapas and woodfired pizza. The Smith in Windermere knows a decent collab when it sees one.

The inside of this cafe/restaurant is like a glossy magazine spread - but not wanky. Think sheepskin throws, open fireplace, alt artwork and alllll the fairylights. The food is a mixture of snacky bits and pizza. Top recs? The smoked paprika pork scratchings with black garlic ketchup and a side of truffle-infused brie. For mains the chestnut mushroom, garlic, English truffle oil, pea shoot, and ricotta pizza is sell-your-soul good.
