This university town is Germany’s answer to Oxford - old, beautiful but with a side helping of gritty dive bars.

Unlike most of Germany, it escaped WW2 pretty much intact so there’s plenty of oldy-worldy buildings and secret courtyards to explore. Turn round the right corners in Heidelberg and you’ll stumble on some of the most eye-watering panoramas since your Dad took you to the IMAX.

Too soon? Heidelberg’s giant castle was destroyed by lightning in 1764 and hasn’t been lived in since.

Still, the old dear’s got a lot going for it with garden mazes, views over the town and the world’s largest wine barrel.

You can get there by bike, walking or funicular (FUN).

Stroll the winding path edged with exotic plants and historical ruins. Cross the classical old bridge and pass the massive amphitheatre built by the Nazis.

Hauptstrasse is the mile-long main road of Heidelberg. And every inch is filled with restaurants and beer halls.

Make like the locals and hop from place-to-place til you end up at the infamous Vetter’s - a friendly bar behind Marktplatz serving up its homebrewed 33% beer. Yikes.

Heidelberg ain’t all pretty-pretty. Karlstorbahnhof is a converted-train-station-come-cultural-centre (catchy).

Pop in for art-house films, cabaret shows, and quirky (i.e. mental) art shows.
