Palma, La Palma, Las Palmas - where the hell am I?

PALMA, LA PALMA, LAS PALMAS - WHERE THE HELL AM I?

You’ll spot them in arrivals. They’re checking their boarding passes, beads of sweat dripping down their faces, searching for clues… ‘Am I in Mallorca?? Was I supposed to meet them in La Palma? Jesus Christ I’m in Gran Canaria 😱

These three sun-drenched places have left even the most discerning traveller scratching their heads. It’s not unheard of to end up on a completely different island to the one you thought you’d booked. The Spanish must love themselves a palm tree ('Palmas') 🌴

Don’t get caught out, this is your guide to: Palma, La Palma, Las Palmas - where the hell am I?

The Beachy One

Palma, Mallorca , Spain

Capital of Mallorca - this one’s a loooong way from the Canaries. You’ll be pretty screwed if you mix this guy up.

Bursting with art galleries, fancy-ass restaurants and lots of old stuff to gawp at, Palma is the cultural hub of the Balearic islands.

Follow the scent of oranges through the old Arab and Jewish quarters down to the golden coast.

How to spot it: The massive gothic cathedral towering over the city.

The Wild One

La Palma, Canary Islands , Spain

La Palma is its very own Canary Island. Smaller than the likes of Tenerife or Lanzarote, it often gets forgotten. Or booked accidently…

People overlook it cos its beaches are black, wild and hard to get to. But people are dumb.

It’s got all the other perks of the Canaries - year round sun, weird volcanic landscapes and fresh seafood, but without the swarms of package holiday tourists.

How to spot it: A skyline of temperate rainforests and the ashy volcanic landscape.

The Alternative One

Las Palmas, Gran Canaria , Spain

Confusingly, Las Palmas hangs out on a different Canary Island to La Palma.

Capital of Gran Canaria, it’s beach vibes with an alternative edge, nothing basic going on here...

Cosmopolitan in a way the other Canary islands just aren’t, expect to find cocktail bars in La Vegueta (the UNESCO old quarter) and plenty of street art.

How to spot it: The rows of colourful houses tumbling down the hillside.
