THE 12 TRIPS OF CHRISTMAS

NO. 5 STRASBOURG

Strasbourg, France

Strasbourg has boldly named itself the ‘Capital of Christmas’.You can’t be mad at its self-confidence though, Strasbourg’s more festive than Cliff Richard munching a mince pie...

The capital of Alsace has got Christmas biscuits (bredele), thousands of lights and timbered houses straight out of a fairytale. But the real reason you’re in Strasbourg in December is Christkindelsmärik, the oldest (and bestest) Christmas Market in France...

Go for the… Christkindelsmärik

The only place for baubles since 1570, this Christmas market by Strasbourg’s Cathedral is everything your festive heart desires. Over 300 chalet stalls (and a GIANT Christmas tree) are dotted around the cobbled old town, with carol singers in the squares. Luckily for your nan, Christkindelsmärik is one of the classier markets, with intricate handmade ornaments instead of sad plastic angels.

Follow the smell of mulled wine to get there, from Nov 22nd - Dec 30th.

Other good stuff

La Petite France, the canal-soaked Old Town is even prettier than the rest of Strasbourg. It’s like walking inside a Christmas card, with quaint old buildings and twinkly lights #peakChristmas

Want even more market? Strasbourg’s Off Market is Christkindelsmärik’s indie little sister. It sells local artists' work, along with fairtrade goods and hosts street art galleries and gigs 🤙
