THE 12 TRIPS OF CHRISTMAS

NO. 6 COPENHAGEN

Copenhagen, Denmark

Christmas in Denmark is all about the Hygge.

The what now?

It may sound like some kind of strange virginal sacrifice but the Hygge is a lot more wholesome. There’s no direct translation but it’s basically the feeling of togetherness and comfort felt with friends and family. Cute. And Christmassy.

Copenhagen does Christmas as effortlessly and stylishly as you’d expect from the Scandis…

Go for the… Tivoli Gardens

The Tivoli Gardens at Christmas are more magical than Dumbledore riding a fire-breathing unicorn.

Glitter explodes from the lake, wooden market stalls sell sugar-dusted doughnuts and fairy lights wink at you from every decorated tree.

The oldest amusement park in the world (it opened in 1843) catch the annual ‘Crazy Christmas Cabaret’ at its Glass Hall Theatre.

Other good stuff

Every year the front of the Hotel d’Angleterre transforms into a giant Christmas scene complete with lights, tinsel and all the trimmings. Head inside for gløgg (traditional white mulled wine) and marzipan snowballs.

Sømod’s Bolcher’ is a sweet factory that does free tastings every day on the run up to Christmas. Think old-school boiled candy.
