TUNISIAN CULTURE CAFE

Tunis, Tunisia

They don’t do nightclubs in North Africa…

Instead head to a traditional cafe for sweet mint tea, afro-berber music, and… weed. Lots of it.

In the middle of the medina in Tunis you’ll find all the above, plus rooftop views over the city. Et Ali Culture Cafe is the genie's lamp of Tunisian cafes.
The most Tunisian cafe of them all, inside you’ll find carpet rugs and sofas with old men reading through their pipe smoke.

But step outside for a rooftop terrace overlooking the ancient Zitouna Mosque (oldest in the country).
They’re not big on alcohol in this part of the world (it results in an eternity of hellfire) so load up on fruity-nutty smoothies, almond coffees or homemade citronnade.
Then settle in for the main event… face-planting enormous dishes of spicy North African grub.

Et Ali’s famous for serving Tunis’ best ‘vielle marmites’ - slow cooked meat bubbling in terracotta pots (hate to be vegan). Follow it with some tooth-achingly sweet pastries.
When you’ve sucked the bones of that last juicy chop, the music starts.

Every week local musicians play gnawa and other afro-berber music at the ‘rooftop soirées’. Locals go nuts and dance around, in a good way.
In the morning you’ll wake up feeling… refreshed?!
