Let’s get ready to rumble… travel. We mean, travel.

Visual goodies

Lisbon’s got its 7 hills and killer views, but Porto’s top of the leader board for ‘free shit to wander round’. You could happily spend a day checking it out from all angles. Head over the Dom Luis bridge for views across the Douro river.
The Livraria Lello book shop here is so good JK Rowling set up camp here in the 90s to write Harry Potter. She basically wrote all the books about this place. Basically.

Porto Cathedral is yer boy for even more intricate architecture.
Normally ‘art on the tiles at a train station’ means piss-soaked urinals covered in graffiti…

But Sao Bento’s packing scenes of the ‘Battle of Valdevez’ across 20,000 blue tiles.

Draaaanks

Porto’s the birthplace of (you guessed it) Port. “Oh right, like my gran drinks”.
Yep, but it makes total sense when you’re sitting on the banks of the Douro with the evening sun hitting you right in the happy place.

Hit up a port tasting at one of the wineries on the Gaia side of the river. Or go one further and visit the Douro wine valley- it’s just over an hour away and looks like Vietnam.

Food

Portuguese eating is fresh sardines at the harbour and sizzling chorizo and ‘bifana’ (hot slivers of garlicky pork in a crusty roll).

Lisbon and Porto will do both well, and for naff all money, though it IS slightly cheaper in Porto.
Folks from Porto will tell you about Francesinha (a condensed cube of meaty- cheesy mayhem floating in a pool of beer sauce). They’ll encourage you that it’s a good thing to eat.

And it is, if you’ve seen off an entire bottle of port first.
Porto gives you all the Portugal you want in a weekend. All the peng looking stuff to stare at and jaw-smacking stuff to put in your face, but it’s cheaper than Lisbon.
