Gallipoli, eh?

The Greeks called it 'the beautiful city' and, to be fair, they absolutely nailed it when they stumbled across this tropical corner of Italy 3000 years ago.

Gallipoli is a walled old town perched on its own little island, surrounded by turquoise Ionian waters and some of the prettiest beaches in southern Italy.

Spend your days wandering sun-bleached lanes, swimming in crystal-clear water and feasting on seafood so fresh it was practically swimming this morning. Then, when the sun goes down, the town comes alive with buzzing piazzas, waterfront bars and some of the best nightlife in Salento.

Where will I sleep?

This cosy little guesthouse puts you right in the sweet spot between Gallipoli’s old town, nightlife and the sea. Cliffside sunbathing spots are just steps away, and the friendly staff are always on hand with local tips or to help sort out excursions.

Mornings start with a free breakfast up on the rooftop, complete with sea views, before a leisurely 20-minute wander through the old town leads you straight to the beach.

What will I do?

When you’re not busy eating your body weight in seafood, Gallipoli has plenty to keep you occupied. Have a wander around the sea-front Castello Angioino di Gallipoli, then duck underground into the Antichi Frantoi Ipogei to explore ancient olive oil mills hidden beneath the town.

For peak holiday mode, jump on a boat tour around the Ionian coast or out to Sant'Andrea Island, with plenty of opportunities for a swim along the way.

Then finish up at Spiaggia della Purità, a gorgeous little beach pressed right up against the old town walls.
